On September 11, 2009, Dr. Grado was awarded the 2009 Profiles of Succes in recognition of Valle del Sol.
On February 2, 2006, Southwest Oncology Centers’ second TomoTherapy began treating patients at its Scottsdale office. We are very excited to be the world’s first group to have two TomoTherapy machines in action, allowing us to offer patients the very latest technology. In addition to the machine itself, Southwest Oncology Centers has put into use a new treatment planning system, which allows the most sophisticated planning available today. Our highly trained physics and dosimetry staff is producing treatment plans, which provide pinpoint accuracy for each treatment.
In October, Dr. Grado was named the Wurtele Family Professor of Radiation Therapy at the University of Minnesota. The Chair is endowed by Mr. C. Angus Wurtele and his family, for the purpose of furthering research in the area of prostate cancer. In addition to his work in Arizona, Dr. Grado serves as the Head of Prostate Brachytherapy at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Prostate Cancer.
On January 2, 2006 Michael Sapozink, M.D., Ph.D. joined the staff of Southwest Oncology Centers. Dr. Sapozink, former Head of Radiation Oncology at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, has been married to his wife Nancy for eighteen years, and has two children, Rachel and Andrew. Dr. Sapozink brings particular expertise in the areas of breast, and head and neck cancers, lymphomas, sarcomas, and brain tumors. Phoenix Magazine has recognized him in its “Top Docs” issues on multiple occasions.
In keeping with its commitment to excellence, Southwest Oncology installed a new Toshiba “Large Bore” CT Scanner in February. This new technology will allow more accurate treatment set-ups, as patients can be positioned on the CT scanner just as they will be positioned on the treatment table. We are also hoping to make the scanner available for diagnostic scans to patients who may not easily fit in a conventional scanner.
